The Brown Bin Collection Service

The Four Dublin Local Authorities propose to introduce a seperate household collection service for food and garden waste. This collection service will be brought in gradually and the introduction of a Brown Bin collection in the Dublin Region will decrease the reliance on landfill and help recycle a potential waste into a valuable resource.

Fingal County Council and Dublin City Council have both introduced a Brown Bin collection service to householders. The expansion of the service to all householders will be on a phased basis over the next two to three years as the necessary treatment facilities are made operational.

What is the Brown Bin

The Brown Bin is a wheeled bin which will collect food and garden waste from householders across Dublin. Food and Garden waste makes up one third of the total waste produced in an average household. As home composting is not always an option for many householders due to practical reasons, the brown bin will provide for collection of this type of waste. This waste can then be composted into a useful resource instead of being sent to landfill. The householder still has the option to carry out home composting if they wish.

When will the Brown Bin be Introduced

The introduction of the Brown bin on a phased basis has commenced in the Dublin region. Fingal Co Council was the first local authority to introduce the Brown Bin on a pilot scheme basis in November 2005. Latest details on the Fingal County Council's brown bin collection service can be found by clicking here.

Dublin City Council commenced a pilot brown bin collection service in September 2006. Currently over 110,000 brown bins have been rolled out. Click here to read more about Dublin City Council's brown bin collection service.
