Update on Household Waste Service in DLRCC

Following talks at the LRC, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to announce that staff engaged in the provision of the Council’s household waste service have accepted proposals whereby the Council will cease to provide a service with effect from Monday 9 August 2010 to the majority of its existing customers.

Panda will commence collecting waste from existing Council customers from that day. The Council will continue to provide a service to a small number of households who currently have a bagged household waste service.

Council management wishes to acknowledge the dedicated service given by staff involved in waste collection over many years to the residents of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. It is especially noteworthy that the full service was maintained by the staff over the past two months, while negotiations continued following the Council’s decision to exit the household waste market.

The Council will make a significant financial saving as a consequence of its decision to cease to provide a household waste service. The redeployment of staff who currently provide the ‘grey’ bin service will result in the delivery of improved Council services in the areas of street cleansing, water and waste services, transportation and parks. Finally, the Council’s existing customers will benefit from an improved service at a significantly lower cost.

The Council has previously written to its customers recommending that they avail of the Panda service for the following reasons:

  1. Panda will provide a ‘grey’ and ‘green’ bin service to all existing Council customers instead of the current ‘grey’ bin service provided directly by the Council and the ‘green’ bin service provided by Greyhound. A ‘brown’ bin service will also be provided from December 2010.
  2. The service will be free until 30th January 2011 to all domestic households who currently avail of the Council’s bin collection service.
  3. The charges (fixed, lift and weight) to be applied from 1 February 2011 will be 20% below the charges currently applied by the Council. These charges will be held at this level until at least 2014.
  4. Panda will continue to operate the Council’s Waiver Scheme (including Hardship Clause) for low-income households.

It is expected that the vast majority of the Council’s existing customers will transfer to Panda.

Customers should continue to present their ‘grey’ and ‘green’ bins for collection on their normal collection day. Customers are also advised to have their bin available for collection as early as possible, as the time of collection may vary.

Any customer who experiences difficulty with their collection from Monday 9 August should contact Panda directly at 1850 62 62 62 or dlrinfo@panda.ie

The Council wishes to reiterate that it remains committed to the Dublin Region Waste Management Strategy and will honour its commitments in relation to existing and proposed regional waste infrastructure.

ENDS.
