Dublin Local Authorities award Greyhound Green Bin contract

The Dublin Local Authorities have awarded Greyhound Recycling & Recovery the contract to collect, process and market dry recyclables arising from household green bins. The decision was taken after an open competitive public tendering process that lasted several months. The contract, which the Councils signed with Greyhound this month, comes into effect on 1st January 2009 and will run for three years. It covers households, apartment complexes and schools within the four local authority areas.

The Local Authorities have constructed a multi-million Euro recycling facility at Ballymount to process the green bin material, and this centre will also be operated by Greyhound. The centre will be officially launched in the New Year.

Commenting on the new arrangements, Matt Twomey, Chair of the Dublin Region Waste Steering Group, said:

"We are delighted with the opening of our new recycling facility which will now enable us to accept all plastics in the green bin. This is a further demonstration of our commitment to providing householders with an efficient, modern and cost effective service. We also look forward to working closely with Greyhound to ensure we achieve our Regional Waste Plan target of 59% recycling.”

On signing the contract, a Greyhound spokesperson said:

"We are delighted that the DLA has chosen Greyhound as its preferred service provider. Greyhound is committed to providing a top class green bin collection service to Dublin through enhanced customer service, while encouraging higher recycling rates as a result of new education and awareness initiatives.

Greyhound is committed to working with the local authorities and non-governmental organisations to build the Dublin Region as a benchmark for environmental excellence."

Greyhound Recycling & Recovery is owned by Dublin brothers Brian and Michael Buckley and operates nationwide from facilities in Dublin and Limerick. The company counts both public and private sector firms among its client base and has been involved in recycling and recovery since 1997. Since 2000 the company has invested heavily in recycling technology and is now recognised as the foremost company when finding sustainable alternatives to landfill.
