Fingal County Council's Brown Bin Service

The brown bin pilot collection scheme was first introduced by Fingal County Council in November 2005. The introduction of a separate bin collection for organic (kitchen and garden) waste was a new departure for the greater Dublin region and the success of the venture depended entirely on your participation and co-operation!

We are delighted to report that thanks to your efforts Fingal County Council have been successful in diverting an average of 25 - 30% of waste from the black bin. Up to now this waste would have gone  directly to landfill where it is responsible for the generation of landfill gases. So by making the best use of your brown bin you are not only keeping your household waste charges down but you are also helping the environment.

Where to next

Plans for the development of Kilshane Cross Recycling Park are proceeding and eventually this is where all the brown bin material collected in the Fingal County Council region will be treated. Brown bin material is currently treated at an authorised recovery facility where it is processed and turned in to compost.

By composting rather than landfilling this material landfill gases are not generated by the waste, leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

If you would like more information about the brown bin collection service in the Fingal Region please contact the Brown Bin helpline at 01-890 6753 or alternatively email your query to brownbins@fingalcoco.ie
